CycleSheffield has started a campaign to ensure that cycle awareness training is part of professional driver training in Sheffield
Taxi drivers
We have met with Sheffield Taxi Trade Association and Sheffield College who in turn have spoken with taxi-licensing in SCC.
All three are supportive of cycle awareness training in the BTEC & NVQ courses for beginning taxi drivers.
We are working with Pedal Ready on ‘delivering’ a ‘unit’ on the BTEC course – its only an hour long – and Pedal Ready can also offer road cycle experience/training as an extra to the trainee taxi drivers.
The content and materials from the BTEC unit can be used as part of the NVQ course.
Bus Drivers
First have been positive and are arranging a meeting to discuss with us what they currently do and consider anything we may suggest to enhance what they do
Stagecoach have not replied yet.
SCC
In March the plan will be to approach SCC about cycle awareness training for their own drivers (mainly with PSV licences I think) and also about cycle awareness training with their main contractors, i.e. Veolia & Amey
Hopefully we can take this to other transport companies in Sheffield. (e.g. the Post Office)
