  1. Hi there,

My name is Martha Kelner. I’m a journalism student at the University of Sheffield and I’m writing a story about potholes in Sheffield’s roads. You’ll no doubt be aware of Victoria Pendleton’s comments about potholes affecting cyclists last week. I’d really appreciate it if someone could comment on how bad the problem of potholes is for people in Sheffield and if it has been worsened by this year’s winter weather. My contact number is 07988 375289. If it’s easier I can phone someone to get a comment.

    Thank you in advance,

    Martha

  2. I’m delighted that you are pressing the Community Assembly for changes to make cycling up to Walkley easier. I made the same request to them last year but had no response. Is there any chance you could extend this route by also asking for a cycle lane and ASL for the traffic lights at the far end of South Road (junction with Walkley Lane?). Also (ideally) a sign warning cars of bikes approaching up Parsonage Crescent – this is a no exit road for cars and a lot of drivers think it is one way – and a toucan crossing to get onto south road (i.e. over Walkley Lane).
Thank you. If this makes no sense please email me and I will explain.

  3. Re Walkley corridor
Now I’ve had a chance to reflect I’m not sure that continuing the cycle lane up Barber Road (i.e. beyond Crookesmoor Road) is such a good idea. The effect of this will be to potentially narrow the road for cyclists going down the hill who are already more vulnerable because going faster. I personally am happy cycling up that hill without a cycle lane. It’s the bit before Crookesmoor Road where it would really help because of the standing traffic. It’s too narrrow to overtake on the right and a cycle lane would legitimise passing on the left.
    Thanks

  4. Hi,
I am engaged in PG study at Nottingham and living in Sheffield. I was recently involved in a bicycle accident on Langsett Road. It drew my attention to the poor design of the tram stops that unnecessarily cause cyclists to have to cross the tracks a great number of times in any journey. As you will be aware the extra unnecessary risk posed is quite significant. The trouble is that SYPTE fail to recognise that there is a problem. In their response to me they assert that in 18 years they have received no notification of any accident (other than mine) involving a cyclist anywhere near a tram stop. I am looking to relieve them of their ignorance and am collecting information on similar accidents. I was wondering whether you could find any information for me to use. I am not asking for names of personal information. Perhaps approximate numbers, the time period, and contact details with which I could provide SYPTE. In any case I would welcome the chance to discuss this with you to see if you can help in some way.

  5. Hello,

I’m a Journalism student from the University of Sheffield and I emailed Ian Loasby recently, asking whether I could be put in contact with Clare Draffin – to woman who’s running the petition against the Ecclesall Road Smartroute – and haven’t received a reply. I was just wondering whether anyone here could tell me roughly how many signatures have been collected for the petition? I’m doing an article on it as part of my coursework and would be incredibly grateful for this information.

Also, if any other members of Cycle sheffield have a comment on the issue, I’d love to hear from you. My email address is abbiedays@googlemail.com and my mobile number is 07508732679.

Thanks in advance and all the best,
    Abigail Evans

  6. I was a member of “pedalpushers” which transformed into cyclesheffield – maybe I still am, don’t remember receiving a subscription request in the last year. There used to be an email list – seems to have disappeared… Is there a list anymore?

  7. Hi, I’m planning on cycling from Wharncliffe Side to Hillsborough. I need somewhere to lock my bike so I can get on the Free Hospital Shuttle Bus which runs along Penistone Road.
    Do you have any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Zoe

      1. Hi Zoe, another option would be to use the bike stands at the Sheffield Community Transport offices on Bedford St. SCT run the hospital bus service so I’m sure they wouldn’t mind if you popped in and asked at reception.

  8. Hello,

I will be in Sheffield 24-27 of May. I want to hire a bike for these days, so could you please give me some addresses of shops?

    Thank you in advance,
    Athina

    1. unfortunately there are no official cycle hire shops in Sheffield. The closest is in the Peak District at Fairholm visitors centre.

      http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting/cycle/cycle-hire-centres/derwent

But you could try and contact one of the local independent shops to see if they can source a bike for you for a few days.

      Id try recycle
      http://recyclebikes.co.uk/

There is also a new venture in the city called bike rehab. They may be able to source you a short term hire
      http://bikerehab.co.uk/

Once again, these are not official hire centres but its just possible they may be able to help you out.

There is a longer term plan to install a Brompton dock service at Sheffield Railway station but Ive not heard any news about that.

  9. Hi, is any one interested in joining me on a ride from Sheffield to York on Friday, June 22nd to ride to the York CTC rally. I am thinking of using the route posted on this site?
    http://www.cyclesheffield.org.uk/route-planning/long-distance-routes/sheffield-to-york/

I’m coming from Leeds on the train and could meet at Meadowhall where the route starts, leaving around 10 a.m from Sheffield. I will be staying in York but it’s easy to get a train back from there or even camp at the CTC cycle rally which is always fun.
Would be great if anyone could make it so I don’t have to ride alone.
Ursula 07745759157 – please feel free to txt or call me if you’re interested or know if others are already doing this ride.
    Thanks
    Ursula

  10. Hello,
My name is Amarni Wood, I am a student at Sheffield Hallam University in my final year, studying media studies, and I am currently putting together a radio piece on whether Britain’s streets are safe enough for cyclists, when it is such a healthy and economically friendly way or travelling. We are doing this story following from the three recent accidents in the news where Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins, and Shane Sutton where all involved in cycling accidents with cars. I am hoping that some Cycle Sheffield will be able to either meet and do and interview with me, or do a phone interview, or even email me a statement about their thoughts on the safety of cyclists on British roads, and how cars react to cyclists.
The show is on Tuesday 27th at around 11:30am, so please get in touch as soon as possible.
You can contact me on the email provided, or alternatively on 07947202054.

If anyone reading this has any stories or opinions on the safety of our streets for cyclists, then please feel free to comment below. It would be much appreciated.

    Amarni Wood

  11. I was interested to see the near miss John Powell Travel Coach video. My daughter lives and cycles in Golders Green in London. She finds the bus drivers fine, but the National Express buses coming off the MI and racing down Finchley Road are intimidating and drive too close to her and other cyclists. I have written to National Express and asked about the training they give their drivers and about the use of technology on their buses to detect cyclists around them. I have also written to Nick Clegg to ask him to follow up the issue. I wonder if people need to write to John Powell Coaches and ask about their training and about how much technology they use to prevent accidents to cyclists and pedestrians. I am beginning to think that cyclists should be writing to all local bus, coach and transport companies asking what their policies are, as well as perhaps offering to give an input to whatever training they offer.
