Getting the best from the email list

CycleSheffield Communications

About three months ago we had a flurry of emails about how difficult it can be to read the  emails from CycleSheffield.

This note tries to help members sort out receiving and posting emails to other members.

What channels do we have?  We have four channels.  An email list (also a web based forum), a fb page, the website and a twitter feed.

The email list is the only channel solely open to members.

Anything posted on the email list is members talking to members so CycleSheffield officers know the views of members.

Receiving emails

Your preferred email address is in the CycleSheffield web-forum list.

Anything posted will end up in this email address’s  inbox. (except anything you post until it gets a reply; then you’ll get yr message and the reply)

The next bit is where you lose the will to live.  There are four settings:

  1. No email: web-only participation

  2. Abridged Email: one summary email of new activity per day

  3. Digest Email: up to 25 full new messages in a single email

  4. All Emails: send each message as it arrives

We have put many people on 2 or 3 at their request but the reading experience of these options is poor: replies jumbled up with messages; messages being re-iterated loads of times etc.

  • If you want to keep up with emails and post responses then the best option is to be on 4.  All Emails. An email and its consecutive replies with same subject line arrive in yr inbox as they are sent
  • To stop yr inbox clogging up set up a CycleSheffield folder on yr email and filter all messages from CycleSheffield into it.
  • An email and its replies will be clustered under the original subject heading, (which is why it is important to keep replies pertinent to the subject heading).

Posting emails

The email address for the list is cyclesheffield@googlegroups.com

Members can post to this address from yr preferred email address

Advice on editing emails and replies

Check out the advice on http://www.cyclesheffield.org.uk/campaignsandcoreprinciples/acceptable-use-dispute-policies/

Changing the settings

If you want to change your settings to 4. All Emails or 1. No Emails you can alter it yourself on the web-forum or ask me at membership@cyclesheffield.org.uk

 Clear as mud eh?

Looking Forward to 2014!

Happy New Year!!

A lot to look forward to this year, folks.  Tour de France!!!  and we are pleased to let you know that SkyRides will be starting in Sheffield in summer 2014.  We know the target is to put on 50 local rides.  We have been invited to talk with British Cycling about the programme and the recruitment of ride leaders this month.  So more details on the email list and at our meetings

January.  The next meeting of the national Space for Cycling campaign is in Sheffield on Saturday 25 January.  Cycle campaign groups from across the country will be sending delegates.  More details at our next meeting Mon 13 Jan 2014

The CTC is holding its Local Liaison Volunteers/Right to Ride reps meeting in Sheffield the day before as some people will be attending both meetings.

We’ll be putting on a Sheffield FridayNightRide around our fair city on Fri 24 Jan and may get out to Darnall to look at the only example of where cycling infrastructure was ‘integrated’ with housing on the Greenland estate.

Do you have one night’s accommodation to offer?

Some delegates to the above meetings may like the offer of accommodation for the night of Fri 24 Jan.  For example, I am offering 1 dble rm, not en-suite,  B&B.  If you are willing to put somebody up that evening please let me know.  Get in touch with me at mick.nott@googlemail.com

February.  The Council’s Scrutiny Committee should be publishing its report on cycling in Sheffield.  There will be much campaigning work to follow up with this; can Sheffield City Council get its act together and see that cycling links its ambitions for clean air, healthier and happier citizens, easing traffic congestion, making travel safer for all, and having quality public spaces, as well as its ambitions for promoting the city as a centre for green tourism?

Start to plan Bike Week, finalise our budget for next financial year, and continue with Space for Cycling campaign work.

CycleSheffield meeting Mon 3 Feb

March. Work on our campaigns and invitation to Jack Scott, Cllr i/c Air Quality Action Plan to attend our meeting to talk about the action point, Promoting smarter travel choices

CycleSheffield meeting Mon 3 Mar

April.  Work on our campaigns, eg taking current & prospective councillors out for bike rides to see what cycling in Sheffield is like, asking local parties and councillors to say what demands from our Space for Cycling campaign they endorse.

Will it be this month or next that SkyRides start?

 CycleSheffield meeting Mon 7 April

May. Local elections on May 22, let’s get the cyclists’ vote out.

CycleSheffield Way of the Roses Ride from Morecambe to Bridlington first week of May.

 CycleSheffield meeting Mon 12 May

June. No doubt CycleSheffield will be putting on rides and events for Bike Week.

It will be the Cycle Sheffield AGM during June with our annual report and deciding our constitution, eg at what age should a member be entitled to vote? 16? 18? – and a buffet!

July. We’ve only got the Tour de France in Sheffield!!!  More plans and events to follow

CycleSheffield meeting 7 Jul or maybe the 14 Jul (Stage 3 of the TdF is on 7 July and will be from Cambridge to London – anybody else want to get to see the finish?)

August. No meeting – just get on with cycling and campaigning.

September. CycleNation conference and so on – too far ahead to think about details!

How about ‘Biking to New York’ this Saturday?

Rotherham United Community Sports Trust, Cycle Rotherham, RMBC, Pedal ready and Stonham/Home Group Volunteers have come together to promote cycling in the town, and more particularly, to encourage biking to Saturday home matches.

Surveyed bike parking, and free bike check and repairs will be available.

Do yourself and the Millers a favour.

Biking to New York is good for your health, and your pocket.

And is very good for Rotherham United in reducing match day congestion, and helping to promote a positive image of your club.(Taken from the Millers site)

A few smiling cyclists helping to hand out some flyers, between 14.00 and 15.00, would be really very welcome.
Cheers

Sad day for Sheffield – the end of the cycle paramedic service in the city centre

Jonathan confirms that the cycle paramedic service will end on 25th October

This is how the Guardian reported the success of the service back in 2009

http://www.theguardian.com/environment/blog/2009/dec/23/cycling-paramedics-sheffied

And now…

My last day as the Cycle Paramedic is 25th Oct. Thank you to ALL for the support over the past 5 years. It’s been a long journey, an adventure, a pleasure, a pain and a privilege.

Yours tiredly.

jonathan

Save the Sheaf Valley Route

CycleSheffield is campaigning to save the Sheaf Valley Cycle Route, which is being degraded through poor planning and lack of consideration.  The route runs from Granville Square to Archer Rd (and then you can cycle on beyond through Millhouses Park towards Dore).  Many cyclists use it and it links Heeley and Meersbrook (which have the greatest number of people cycling to work in Sheffield) to the city centre.

See the full campaign detail, link below

http://www.cyclesheffield.org.uk/coreprinciples/save-the-sheaf-valley-route/

Pedalpushers

Those of you who have been following us for many years will know that the Sheffield cycle campaigning group was originally formed as “pedalpushers” over 20 years ago.

The group’s name changed to CycleSheffield some years back and next week the old pedalpushers domain name will cease to link to this site.

So its farewell to pedalpushers.org.uk, you served us well for many years.

If you still have that url bookmarked somewhere , it may be time to delete it.
