The Highways Committee discussed the proposal to remove bus lanes on 10th October and decided to go with the recommendations from Place. These can be summarised as follows:
Part of the Bus Lane at Banner Cross will go.
The Hunters Bar – Rustlings Rd bus lane will go, but not until there is an alternative cycle route through Endcliffe Park.
The Shared Use proposal for the pavement on Ecclesall Rd is being dropped – a victory for common sense.
Our suggestions for improvements to cycling on adjacent streets are being considered.
So, a partial victory for us, and the principle we hope that you can’t just take out bus lanes without considering cyclists. We don’t particularly want to share space with buses but at the moment it’s all we have in many locations.
The Smart Routes project we hope will provide a better environment for all users of Ecclesall Rd overall.
It was agreed at the CycleSheffield meeting that the films we showed at the Harland Cafe during Bike Week could be loaned to members for 1 week , for private viewing only.
We would just ask for a donation of £5 towards CycleSheffield’s funds for the two DVDs for 1 week.
and a compilation of vimeo films called ‘Two on Four Wheels’.
Both were made by couples undertaking impressive and inspiring cycle tours; the first through Mongolia and Nepal to the Ganges, and the second set out from Guernsey to cycle east around the world.
Let us know if you would like to borrow them and we can arrange times for you to (pay!), collect and return them.
As bike week approaches a reminder about the get Britain Cycling e-petition.
The e-petition was launched in support of the report by The Times as part of their ‘Cities Fit for Cycling’ campaign. The petition needs to reach 100,000 signatures to trigger a debate in Parliament.
The total number of signatories now stands at just under 67,000, which is remarkable, but we urge everyone who cares about making Britain a truly cycle-friendly country to support the all-party call to ‘Get Britain Cycling’ at :
This is a final reminder for our ride this Sunday – June 16th. It’s sure to be a great day for cycling and picnicking with the friendliest cyclists in Sheffield – YOU!
We will set out from Barker’s Pool at 9.30am for a picnic at Redmires Reservoirs, so please bring your own food and drinks. Our route will be via Forge Dam and the Porter and Mayfield valleys. We will have time for a wander round Hammond’s Field and possibly stroll up to Stanage Pole if we are feeling full of energy, then return down Whyming Brook to Rivelin Dams, Manchester Road and returning to Barker’s Pool in the mid to late afternoon. It is a much shorter ride (less than 15 miles) than usual for our Bike Week run so there is no train return option but we will take a very gentle pace and enjoy the flowers and wildlife under perfect blue skies!!
As usual I would much prefer you to let me know if you are joining us and especially if you would like to meet us at the entrance to Bingham Park around 10am rather than at Barker’s Pool; it’s in your best interests too as then I’ll know how much flapjack to make!
